A high-volume spay day is a logistical feat. It requires skilled veterinary teams, specialized equipment, and a small army of volunteers. It also requires funding. Each cat we serve costs approximately $80 to cover surgery, vaccines, microchipping, and basic care. That means we need to raise $16,000 to make this day possible. We have already surpassed $5000 and are hopeful the community will help us support this large scale event through the Jefferson County Gives Day of fundraising

Mission

The mission of the Beatrice Humane Society is to shelter, protect and place lost and homeless companion animals in Gage County, and to be an educational resource.

Our vision: We envision a community that embraces companion animals with compassion. This includes protecting animals, promoting responsible pet ownership and educating the public.

While Jefferson County is outside of our typical geographical focus area, we recognize a neighbor in need, and a community ready for a solution. We are here to help our neighboring communities by increasing access to affordable preventative spays and neuters through our Low Cost Spay and Neuter Clinic and we are excited to work with Fairbury and Jefferson County residents to help provide this high impact intervention. They say that If you give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime. We are here to do (and teach) some catfishing! See what we did there? The Big Fix: Jefferson County Edition- 200 Cats. One Day. Endless Compassion.

In the heart of Jefferson County, a quiet crisis has been unfolding for years—one that affects not only the lives of thousands of outdoor cats, but also the health, safety, and well-being of our entire community. Every spring and summer, Homeless No More and good-hearted neighbors brace for the flood of kittens born to unaltered outdoor cats. These litters, often born in barns, alleys, and backyards, face a harsh reality: hunger, disease, predators, and exposure to the elements. Most won’t survive. Those who do often continue the cycle, producing more litters, more suffering, and more strain on already overburdened community.­

But what if we could stop the cycle—humanely, effectively, and with compassion?

This March, Beatrice Humane Society is launching our most ambitious spay/neuter initiative yet: a High-Volume Spay Day for the cats of Fairbury and Jefferson County. Our goal is bold but achievable: to spay or neuter, vaccinate, and microchip 200 cats in a single day. That’s 200 lives changed. 200 cats protected from disease. 200 cats who will no longer contribute to the overpopulation crisis. And it’s only possible with your help.

Why This Matters

Spaying and neutering is the cornerstone of humane animal welfare. It’s the only proven method to stabilize and reduce outdoor cat populations over time. When cats are altered, they no longer reproduce, which means fewer kittens born into uncertain futures. But the benefits go far beyond population control:

• Healthier Cats: Spayed and neutered cats are less likely to suffer from infections like FeLV and FIV, even common kitty colds become much less common as kitties health improve. They’re also less prone to roaming, fighting, and injury.
• Vaccinated and Protected: Every cat in our Spay Day will receive core vaccines—rabies and FVRCP—to protect against deadly diseases like rabies, panleukopenia, calicivirus, and feline herpesvirus. Nebraska has had hundreds of humans exposed to Rabies from cats living in the community. Preventing human Rabies exposure by proactively vaccinating our community cats is a public health benefit that has an immeasurable long term benefits.
• Microchipped for Safety: Each cat will be microchipped, giving them a permanent form of identification and increasing the chances of being reunited with caregivers if lost or injured. This will also allow long term tracking of the vaccinations and medical care given during this event.
• Community Benefits: Fewer litters mean fewer cats in distress, fewer nuisance complaints, and a healthier, more balanced ecosystem.

This isn’t just about cats—it’s about community. It’s about ensuring that every neighborhood, from downtown Fairbury to the farmlands of Jefferson County, has the tools and support to care for its feline residents responsibly and humanely.

You might be wondering: can one day really make a difference?

Absolutely.

In June of 2025, we hosted a similar event in Wymore and Blue Springs. In just one day, we altered 180 cats and kittens. The results were immediate and profound. Cats in need from those communities dropped dramatically. In areas where we once saw 8–10 kittens surrendered each month, we didn’t see a single kitten for over 5 months. That’s not just a statistic—it’s a testament to the power of targeted, high-impact intervention.

Now, we’re bringing that same energy and expertise to Jefferson County. With your help, we can replicate—and even surpass—that success.
